The “Open in Edge” button can be frustrating and confusing to users. Here are the steps to disable the “Open in Edge” button.

Open Internet Explorer and click the Gear icon in the top right hand corner of your browser.

Go to Internet Options

Then Go to Advanced and then check the box: Hide the button (next to the New Tab button) that opens Microsoft Edge. Save your Settings.

Close Internet Explorer and reopen. Your “Open Edge” icon should be gone!

I ran into this issue with a customer today. She wanted their SharePoint site, part of their Office 365 subscription, as her home page in Internet Explorer 11. I put their SharePoint URL as the homepage in Internet Explorer. As soon as I opened Internet Explorer 11, it would instantly crash. After trying to open Internet Explorer up multiple times, and each time it crashed, I knew it was something between Internet Explorer and SharePoint Online not playing nice.

I went to EventViewer and found this message.

The item that stood out to me was the faulting module name: ucrtbase.dll. I did some research online and found the SharePoint Export Database Launcher addon was causing the crash. According to this site; the SharePint Export Database Launcher does the following tasks.

SharePoint Export Database Launcher

An ActiveX control that enables a user to create or open a database that contains data from a list in Microsoft SharePoint Foundation

When a page that contains a view of a list opens, the _ExportToDatabase function is called, which is defined in the OWS.js file. This function creates the control on the page and exports the list.

This control is defined in OWSSUPP.dll, a dynamic-link library (DLL) that is installed in the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office14\ directory on the client computer during Microsoft Office 2010 Setup.

I opened Internet Explorer 11 and disabled the SharePoint Export Database Launcher. I tried opening the SharePoint site, and Internet Explorer 11 opened just fine and didn’t crash.

In this situation, it was fine to disable this add-in since this company doesn’t need to use this add-in. However, if someone has a true fix, instead of a workaround, please let me know.

A customer brought in a laptop today that couldn’t access Google.com or Gmail. They could go to all the other sites except those two. So I opened Internet Explorer and I got this error when trying to access Google.com:

When I saw that error I had no clue what was happening. I thought maybe there could be a virus giving us this issue. However I had run a quick scan with Malwarebytes before , and it didn’t find any objects. Also, the laptop was very fast. I decided to try reset Internet Explorer to its defaults (including erasing personal settings) – it didn’t fix the issue. I was practically stomped.

Then I opened Google Chrome and the same thing was happening. Google Chrome’s error message was a lot more helpful.

I started looking around and decided this error might have something to do with the antivirus software running on the laptop. The laptop had Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 installed. I started disabling the Antivirus protection and some of the other settings. I saved those settings and opened Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. I went to Google.com and the site loaded in both browsers. I used the process of elimination until I came upon the culprit that was blocking Google.com and Gmail.

Here is the steps I found to work. Attn: This is a workaround, do this at your own risk.

Step One: Close all open Internet browsers. Open your Kaspersky control panel and click Settings. Then go to the Advanced Settings tab and click on Network. Under the “Encrypted connections scan ” uncheck Scan encrypted connections. Click Apply and OK.

Step Two: Close the control panel and open your browser. Try going to Google.com, if it works you are good to go. If you can’t go to Google.com, restart your computer and it should take care of the issue.

I tried to reinstall the certificates in the browsers since that seemed to be why I was got that error. When I opened the browser I got the same error. At this point,I believe there is a certificate conflict between Kaspersky and the browsers. If you update to the 2014 version there is a possibility that would fix this issue.

I personally don’t think it is a big deal to keep “scan encrypted connections” unchecked. This only disables that feature. You still have virus protection and a firewall for your computer.

I “Googled” the issue that I was having and Kaspersky has a forum thread full with this issue. Check it out if you want more information.

I recently worked on a Windows 7 64 bit laptop that was having issues installing the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 (KB2862772).

The laptop would install the update and then I would restart. However, during the reboot it would do its normal update process “Configuring Windows Updates”, it would get to about 35% and then say “Failure Configuring Windows Updates, Reverting Changes”.

I searched online for some help but no one had a good solution for this issue. After a bunch troubleshooting this is the solution I found.

Step One: On the laptop, I went to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off. I unchecked the Internet Explorer 11 box and disabled the browser.

( On a side note) I don’t know why it said Internet Explorer 11, it should have said IE 10 since that was the version I was on. That could be one of the reasons the security update for Internet Explorer 10 didn’t want to install.

Step Two: I then went to Windows Update and installed the Security Update for Internet Explorer 10. The update was installed, so I restarted the computer. I waited -with crossed fingers – and it went through the “Configuring Windows Updates” and installed just fine!

Step Three: I then went back to the Control Panel and found the “Turn Windows features on or off” and checked the Internet Explorer 11 box. Once Internet Explorer was installed again, I typed iexplore in the search box and opened IE 10. It had updated the browser. I then checked my Windows Updates again and installed Internet Explorer 11.

Background: One of our customers was having display issues with Internet Explorer 10. I uninstalled the Internet Explorer 10 Windows Update and reverted back to using Internet Explorer 9. I made these changes and the display issue was fixed! A little while later I was informed that when trying to log into the web version of AMS360 the following box would pop up:

Troubleshooting: The AMS360 client was already installed but I decided I would reinstall the client. Didn’t help. Made sure the website was added to the Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer- it was. And as far as I knew all the .Net Framework was installed, since it had been working earlier. After troubleshooting the issue for a while I decided to call Vertafore support. A helpful technician answered the phone. She gave me the following solution and it worked!

Solution: I deleted the program shortcut for the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer. I then opened the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer and went to the AMS360 login portal and everything went just fine. When I clicked on the AMS360 Internet Explorer shortcuts, I would get the same “AMS360 client not installed” error. So I changed the AMS360 internet shortcut and favorite to open up in the 32 bit version of the browser. I then tried the shortcuts and they worked like a charm.

Retrospect: When I rolled Internet Explorer 10 back and decided to use Internet Explorer 9 that’s when the issues came. When you roll the browser back, Microsoft does you the “favor” of launching all of your internet shortcuts and favorites in the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer. AMS360 is not compatible with the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer, henceforth the error message. Once all the shortcuts were pointed to the 32 bit Internet Explorer everything worked!

Thanks so much to Debra Beckman @ Vertafore support.

We cannot establish connection with Evernote application. Most likely you have ‘Enhanced Protected Mode’ enabled. To enable Evernote Clipper please preform following steps: 1. Navigate to Tools->Internet Options-> Advanced 2. In Security section unmark ‘Enable Enhanced Protected Mode’ 3. Save changes 4. Restart Internet Explorer If it does not help, please submit support ticket at http://support.evernote.com

Our customer was running Internet Explorer 10 and apparently the security settings didn’t allow Evernote Clipper to clip web pages.

Troubleshooting: I checked to see if ‘Enhanced Protected Mode’ was enabled and it wasn’t. I then tried clipping a different webpage and I got the same result.

Solution: Open Internet Explorer and click the ‘gear’ icon in the right-hand corner

                           and select Internet Options.

Select the Security tab and then uncheck ‘Enable Protected Mode’. Select OK and restart Internet Explorer.

After I fixed Internet Explorer 10 crashing on start up, (previous post) I ran into another issue. Every time I would try printing a web page out of Internet Explorer 10, my browser would freeze and then crash. I started looking online for a fix. I searched on forums and all over the internet but could not find a fix for this issue. Here is some of the troubleshooting I went through before I found the fix.

I tried running Internet Explorer 10 as administrator. I ran it without-addons. I ran Internet Explorer with Enable Protected Mode, selected and deselected. I tried everything I could think of.

I then decided to check for Windows Updates. In Windows Updates, there was an update for a DisplayLink Display Adapter (01E6). I installed the DisplayLink Adapter Driver Update. I then tried printing a webpage out of Internet Explorer and it worked fine. Every since I installed the DisplayLink Driver Update I was able to print out of Internet Explorer 10.

That seems like a weird fix for a IE 10 printing issue and I can’t explain why it worked. My theory is that since I selected, use software rendering instead of GPU rendering for accelerated graphics (look at previous post), the graphics driver would freeze or hang and then in turn I couldn’t print.

So if you are having issues printing out of Internet Explorer 10, one thing I would try is to update your graphics/display driver. If this fixes your issue like it did mine, let me know by posting in the comments.

One of our customers wanted the latest edition of Internet Explorer for Windows 7. So I downloaded Internet Explorer 10 for them. When I would opened Internet Explorer 10, it would instantly crash on start up. Here are the steps to resolve the issue.

Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options.

Next click on the Advanced tab and check the box Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering.

Then restart your computer. Open up Internet Explorer and it should now work fine!

Update 2/22/15 : I noticed I received a bunch of hits on this article recently. I don’t know if this corresponds with this Internet Explorer crashing issue or not but I thought I would post a link just in case. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Symantec-Confirms-Faulty-Antivirus-Update-That-Caused-Internet-Explorer-Crashes-473883.shtml
Good Luck!
