Have been getting this error message for several failed attempts to upgrade to Win10. Will try this approach today. My only question is why hasn't Microsoft responded to the many people who have gotten this error - why has MS left us to figure it out on our own. Thanks TechSpeeder, in advance.

I am guessing you removed any potential software that would give you problems, like antivirus? Also you wouldn't happen to have any corrupt Windows profiles?

That doesn't work for everyone. I am currently using Windows 7 and have tried it twice and double checked that the startup items were "unchecked" and remained unchecked through both failed attempts.

As explained I ran msconfig and went to the startup tab. Under the startup tab I removed all software from starting up. Just to be sure I did a logoff/restart and ran msconfig again and found out my Avast had turned the startup check back on. I than uninstalled Avast and went through the whole procedure again. This time there were no startup issues and I ran the win 10
install successfully. After 2 plus hours I had win 10. Only problem was that my toshiba media player would not play my dvd and I could find no current update to same. Also the windows media player did not work for me either. Downloaded VLC media player and it worked.

Lots of luck and many thanks to Techspeeder.
