My client was using Publisher 2016 as part of the Microsoft Office 365 E3 suite on a Windows 10 Pro computer.

It turns out the fix was simple enough.

I ran a Quick Repair of Microsoft Office. Once the Quick Repair was completed, I opened Microsoft Publisher and Spell Checker and Dictionary was once again working. If you need instructions on how to run a Quick Repair on Office continue reading:

Step One: Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features

Step Two: Find Microsoft Office (365) and right-click on it and select Change.

Step Three: Select Quick Repair

Let the Quick Repair complete and open Microsoft Publisher again. Everything should be working correctly now.

This is the first time I have used the Office Deployment toolkit for Office 2016. To be honest, I have never used the Office Deployment toolkit at all. I decided to blog about how to install Office 2016 from a shared network drive using Office Deployment toolkit. This blog post may be a bit basic and tedious – but I want those who are new at using this tool to be able to figure out how to use it. I am also documenting the process for myself so I don’t forget how to do it.

In the process of learning how to use the Office deployment toolkit, I found many websites that had parts of the process documented. However, it seemed they never quite had a full documentation process. I will show you from start to finish on how to deploy Office 2016 from a network location.

Step One: Let’s download the Office Deployment toolkit for Office 2016. Once you have the tool downloaded, extract the files to your desktop. You will see two files, a setup.exe file and a configuration.xml file. The configuration.xml file will need edited and will not work out-of-box. I would recommend deleting the configuarion.xml file and starting with a new one.

During my research, I found an awesome site that helps you create an XML file for Office deployment. This is the site URL: http://officedev.github.io/Office-IT-Pro-Deployment-Scripts/XmlEditor.html . The site should look similar to this.

At this website, you will create the XML file. This process is pretty self-explantory. Select the version of Office you want along with any other customizations. When you are finished customizing you XML file , click Export. Once the file is exported, rename the file to download.xml. Technically, you can name this file anything you want, but it will help to keep the deployment orderly.

Step Two: Create your network folder and map a drive on your computer to this folder. If you need help mapping your network drive you can find information here. Now copy download.xml and the setup.exe file into your shared network folder. Open a command prompt, and type the following command to download Office from Microsoft’s CDN.

Change your directory to your network drive, in my situation is was just R:

Next type setup.exe /download download.xml .

Unfortunately, you won’t get a status with how far along your Office download is. I can give you a couple tips. First, no warning or error boxes will pop-up if you typed your command correctly. Second, you will see a blinking blank below your command – this means Office is downloading. Third, you can go to your network drive and see if the Office folders are there. You should see the Office folder almost instantly after you execute this command

It will take a little while to download the Office files. Typically, on a 100mbps Internet connection, it takes 15 minutes to download.

While the Office is downloading, we need to create another xml file. This XML file will tell the computer how we want to install Office. Technically, you could just run the download.xml file with the configure switch instead of the download swtich. However, this approach will give you more flexibility going forward if you ever change the location where Office is stored. So let’s go to the Office 365 Configuration XML Editor site. Configure an XML file to point to where the download of Office 2016 is – along with your other customizations. This is what my configuration.xml file looks like. If you notice, it looks identical to my download.xml file. Everything stayed the same between my download.xml and configuration.xml since my download and install options didn’t change.

Lets check back in on our first command. If your Office finished downloading you will see the dash below your command like this. You can also check the download folder. It should have close to 10 files and 1.10GB of data.

Now we are ready to run the configure command to install Office 2016 on your network computers.

Copy your configuration.xml file into the same folder as the setup.exe and download.xml file. Open Command Prompt again and type the following command.

Yeah the installation completed successfully! Even for a small network this makes sense. The installation is way faster than if you install Office from the Office 365 portal.

That is all there really is to it. If I made something unclear or if you have more tips for me abou deploying Office 2016 I would love to hear your input.

I ran into this bizarre issue today. A customer called and said two of their computers could not email out of QuickBooks 2013 using Outlook 2013. Both computers were running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. I connected to one of the troublesome computers and sure enough, I browsed to Edit > Preferences > Send Form. Under Send Form they had the Web Mail and QuickBooks E-mail options but the Outlook option was mysteriously missing.

So I rolled up my sleeves and went to work on it.

After about five or six hours of troubleshooting this issue I finally was able to get the problem resolved. I was on the phone with a QuickBooks rep for over two hours and he didn’t know the answer to the issue either. Here are some of the troubleshooting steps I went through before I found the solution. I will include links at the bottom of my article for some of the websites I visited trying to find a solution.

I. I made sure Outlook 2013 was a supported version in QuickBooks 2013.

II. Made Sure Outlook was the default mail program.

III. Set the default email program in Internet Explorer.

IV. Made sure their was a Mail profile in Outlook. I also created a new Outlook profile just in case that was the issue. It wasn’t.

V. I ran a repair on Office 2013 and QuickBooks 2013.

VI. I uninstalled Office 2013 and QuickBooks Premier 2013 and then reinstalled both programs.

VII. I made sure the QuickBooks user had full permissions.

VIII. Signed into QuickBooks with another user on the troublesome computer and that user had the same issue.

IX. Connected to another computer with the same Office and QuickBooks configuration and they could send emails out of QuickBooks with Outlook.

X. I installed QuickBooks 2015 on one of the workstations with the issue. I restored a backup of the company file into QuickBooks 2015 and I had the exact same issue – I couldn’t use Outlook 2013 to email.

XI. Made sure I was running a 32 bit version of Microsoft Office.

XII: Tested to make sure my MAPI32.dll was working fine.

What I took away from my troubleshooting so far was that this issue was workstation specific and it had nothing to do with permissions, the QuickBooks data file, or QuickBooks version. I was grasping for straws at this point. I found other people online with the same problem but nobody had answers. After some more searching, I came across a tip from a Intuit forum that fixed my issue. Hats off to DLAB_IT , you saved my day! Here is how he explained this issue.

This may be a combination of Intuit and Microsoft not playing nicely. Intuit QuickBooks seems to still be looking at old pointer locations for MAPI information while Microsoft is moving away from those and going to new HTTP/RPC driven ‘solutions’ – in short Intuit is looking and Microsoft isn’t pointing. DLAB_IT

Are you ready for the solution? Here goes. . .

Step One: Browse to C:\Windows\win.ini . Open the win.ini file add the following section at the bottom of the file.

[MAIL]

MAPI=1

MAPIX=1

Note: There shouldn’t be any spaces between the words. Save the file. If it doesn’t let you save the file to the same location, just save it to your desktop and then copy and paste it back into the C:\Windows\win.ini directory and overwrite the old file.

Step Two: Open Registry Editor and add these keys and values. You won’t have most of these keys. I also included a download link to OneDrive where you can download each registry key I exported from my computer that had this issue. These registry files were from a computer running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. However, do this at your own risk and always backup your computer before messing with the registry.

Download: Fix One

Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MAIL]
String Value: “MAPI”=”1”

I added these registry keys and files . I opened up QuickBooks and tried not to get my hopes to high. I went under Edit > Preferences > Send From in Quickbooks. Under “Send From” I saw Outlook listed!I couldn’t believe it. I selected Outlook as the default mail option and send a test email and everything was fine! I hope this works for you.

Update 6/2/15: I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard another customer was having this issue. I knew how long it took me before to get this issue fixed. The customer was running a Windows 7 computer. He had Outlook 2013 and Quickbooks 2015 Enterprise installed.

Just like before, Quickbooks wasn’t recognizing Outlook as a “Send Form” option. I followed my steps below and it worked. Just wanted to let you know that this fix works for computers running Windows 7 with Quickbooks Enterprise 2015 and Outlook 2013.

Update 6/24/15: The work-around below worked fine until my customer contacted me and said he couldn’t email out of QuickBooks. So long story short, I had to disable Outlook from running as an administrator so our customer would be able to send emails from Quickbooks using Outlook. If you want more of the background to this issue, read the original portion of this post.

Now that the work around wasn’t going to solve the issue, I had to figure out what was happening. I scoured the Internet trying to find the fix to this problem but no one had the answer for me. I remembered I had written this post so I decided to go over my notes again. I came upon the part about Internet Explorer not downloading executables. I decided to check that out again. Sure enough, I couldn’t download executables either. I also found this forum, that got me thinking.

I decided to check where Internet Explorer was storing its temporary Internet files. Under current location there was nothing listed. I thought this was very suspicious so I checked Internet Explorer on my computer. Sure enough under the current location for temporary Internet files I saw a path (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WIndows\INetCache).

I also noticed on the defective computer, that temporary Internet files were allowed to take up 0MB. I tried to make that larger but it kept giving me an error.

I decided to move the location of the temporary Internet files to another place on drive C . I allocated 500MB of disk space to temporary Internet files. I then was forced to log off so these changes could be saved.

Once I logged back into Windows, I opened Internet Explorer and I was now able to download executable files. I then opened Outlook 2013, and found an email that had pictures embedded in it. Much to my delight, the pictures loaded just fine! Every email I clicked, that had pictures in it, loaded just fine!

Conclusion: Many people in the forums and the Internet said to make sure your Outlook temp folder and the Temporary Internet Files folder are empty. However, in my case the temporary Internet files folder wasn’t set properly and was to low to be able to download anything at all. Since Outlook’s picture settings are based off the temporary Internet files settings in Internet Explorer this was causing the photos not to load.

I hope this helps. Please leave a comment below and follow me on Twitter.

Original Post: I recently worked on this problem. The customer was using Microsoft Outlook 2013 for his email client. It was working great except for one thing. Whenever he got an email that had imbedded pictures he couldn’t download the pictures. The error he got when he tried downloading pictures was the following; cannot display linked pictures.

Here is some of the troubleshooting steps I went through and then the eventual work-around I found. I started Outlook 2013 in safe mode. You can start Outlook in Safe Mode by holding the CTRL key when opening the program. This didn’t fix the issue.

I also made sure there were no addins that were causing issues with downloading pictures in Outlook. There were no additional addins.

I also installed the latest Microsoft Office updates. This too didn’t help.

I noticed McAfee was installed on his computer. I disabled the firewall and some of the other settings but to no avail. I also uninstalled McAfee just in case something in the program was blocking picture downloads.

During my research of this issue, I found Office 2013 is loosely based on Internet Explorer. So I started by changing various Internet Explorer 11 settings. This didn’t help. I tried resetting Internet Explorer back to its default settings, no luck. I knew the customer said he was having trouble with Internet Explorer 11, so I downgraded his browser to IE 10. I then opened Outlook but I was still stuck with the same issue. I also noticed troubleshooting this issue, that if I didn’t start Internet Explorer as an administrator, I couldn’t download executables from the web.

I decided to try running Outlook as an administrator. This time I tested the picture download setting and the pictures starting downloading! The only problem was the user account on this computer was already an admin. I decided to just go with this workaround.

I went to the Control Panel > User Accounts > Change User Account Control settings. I set this setting to never notify.

I then right-clicked on the Outlook 2013 program shortcut. I then went to the Compatibility tab and clicked the option Run this Program as an Administrator and applied that setting. This allows the program to always run as an administrator without getting a security prompt.

This worked for me, I would warn that this is a workaround and it may make your computer more vulnerable to viruses.

I had a situation recently, where I had to install Microsoft Office 2013 on a computer that didn’t have internet access. Office 2013 is not sold with disc, but with a product key card. Here is how I managed to install Office 2013 completely offline. You will need Internet access one time to download the disc image of Office 2013, after you have the disc image you will be able to install Office completely offline on other computers.

Set up a Microsoft account for the customer. You can sign up here.

Next go to www.office.com/setup and sign in with your Microsoft Account.

Enter the product key and hit “get started”. Go through the setup until you come to the “download Microsoft Office to the computer” screen.
I called Microsoft and opened a support ticket. Microsoft Support had me log into the administrator account on the computer to see if Lync would work, it didn’t. He had me try logging into the Lync user account on my personal computer and it logged in just fine. We ran the online repair option for Microsoft Office 2013, no success. Installed Lync 2010 on the computer and signed in everything worked great! In the meantime, my coworker reminded me that K9 Web Protection was installed on this computer. Microsoft support told me to uninstall K9 Web Protection. I uninstalled K9 Web Protection. I then signed into Lync 2013 without any issues.

Solution: I uninstalled K9 Web Protection and then logged into Lync 2013 without any issues and it worked just fine. K9 Web Protection was blocking Lync from accessing some background websites and services. I would recommend uninstalling or disabling any web filtering or web protection programs and then try logging in. In my case, the issue was then resolved. Let me know if it helps, I was ready to pull my hair out till I found the solution. Laughs.

Microsoft Office normally does a great job on picking your default local file location. However, if you work with documents on your server a lot it can become annoying to always have to browse to the server to open your documents. Thankfully it is an easy setting to change. Here are the steps to change the file location, it’s the same for both Word and Excel.

Step One: Open Microsoft Word or Excel and Click on File.

Click on File

Step Two: Select Options.
