My client was using Publisher 2016 as part of the Microsoft Office 365 E3 suite on a Windows 10 Pro computer.

It turns out the fix was simple enough.

I ran a Quick Repair of Microsoft Office. Once the Quick Repair was completed, I opened Microsoft Publisher and Spell Checker and Dictionary was once again working. If you need instructions on how to run a Quick Repair on Office continue reading:

Step One: Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features

Step Two: Find Microsoft Office (365) and right-click on it and select Change.

Step Three: Select Quick Repair

Let the Quick Repair complete and open Microsoft Publisher again. Everything should be working correctly now.

This is the first time I have used the Office Deployment toolkit for Office 2016. To be honest, I have never used the Office Deployment toolkit at all. I decided to blog about how to install Office 2016 from a shared network drive using Office Deployment toolkit. This blog post may be a bit basic and tedious – but I want those who are new at using this tool to be able to figure out how to use it. I am also documenting the process for myself so I don’t forget how to do it.

In the process of learning how to use the Office deployment toolkit, I found many websites that had parts of the process documented. However, it seemed they never quite had a full documentation process. I will show you from start to finish on how to deploy Office 2016 from a network location.

Step One: Let’s download the Office Deployment toolkit for Office 2016. Once you have the tool downloaded, extract the files to your desktop. You will see two files, a setup.exe file and a configuration.xml file. The configuration.xml file will need edited and will not work out-of-box. I would recommend deleting the configuarion.xml file and starting with a new one.

During my research, I found an awesome site that helps you create an XML file for Office deployment. This is the site URL: http://officedev.github.io/Office-IT-Pro-Deployment-Scripts/XmlEditor.html . The site should look similar to this.

At this website, you will create the XML file. This process is pretty self-explantory. Select the version of Office you want along with any other customizations. When you are finished customizing you XML file , click Export. Once the file is exported, rename the file to download.xml. Technically, you can name this file anything you want, but it will help to keep the deployment orderly.

Step Two: Create your network folder and map a drive on your computer to this folder. If you need help mapping your network drive you can find information here. Now copy download.xml and the setup.exe file into your shared network folder. Open a command prompt, and type the following command to download Office from Microsoft’s CDN.

Change your directory to your network drive, in my situation is was just R:

Next type setup.exe /download download.xml .

Unfortunately, you won’t get a status with how far along your Office download is. I can give you a couple tips. First, no warning or error boxes will pop-up if you typed your command correctly. Second, you will see a blinking blank below your command – this means Office is downloading. Third, you can go to your network drive and see if the Office folders are there. You should see the Office folder almost instantly after you execute this command

It will take a little while to download the Office files. Typically, on a 100mbps Internet connection, it takes 15 minutes to download.

While the Office is downloading, we need to create another xml file. This XML file will tell the computer how we want to install Office. Technically, you could just run the download.xml file with the configure switch instead of the download swtich. However, this approach will give you more flexibility going forward if you ever change the location where Office is stored. So let’s go to the Office 365 Configuration XML Editor site. Configure an XML file to point to where the download of Office 2016 is – along with your other customizations. This is what my configuration.xml file looks like. If you notice, it looks identical to my download.xml file. Everything stayed the same between my download.xml and configuration.xml since my download and install options didn’t change.

Lets check back in on our first command. If your Office finished downloading you will see the dash below your command like this. You can also check the download folder. It should have close to 10 files and 1.10GB of data.

Now we are ready to run the configure command to install Office 2016 on your network computers.

Copy your configuration.xml file into the same folder as the setup.exe and download.xml file. Open Command Prompt again and type the following command.

Change your directory to your network drive, in my situation is was just R:

Next type setup.exe /configure configuration.xml .

Yeah the installation completed successfully! Even for a small network this makes sense. The installation is way faster than if you install Office from the Office 365 portal.

That is all there really is to it. If I made something unclear or if you have more tips for me abou deploying Office 2016 I would love to hear your input.

Recently, we upgraded a customer from a local Exchange server to Office 365. For a majority of the users, we purchased Office 365 Business Premium licenses that included Office 2016 (Buy Office 2016).

Office 2016 activated just fine on all the computers besides one PC. The computer was running Windows 8.1 with Office 2013. We uninstalled Office 2013 and downloaded and installed Office 2016 from his Office 365 account. After the installation, a dialog box prompted him to sign into his Office 365 account to activate Office. He signed into his account, and Office 365 tried to verify his subscription but it would eventually error out and say:

Sorry, we ran into a problem while trying to install the product key. If this keeps happening, you should try repairing your office product. (System error: 0x80041015)

I wasn’t sure what to do so I tried all the things below – but to no avail.

I uninstalled Office – twice. Didn’t fix it.

Tried Repairing Office 2016 – didn’t work.

Logged in with the domain administrator account and tried activating Office – failed.

Tried activating office with another Office 365 account – that didn’t work either.

Started Office in Safe Mode – no go.

Deleted credentials out of credential manager. Same results

Upgraded computer from Windows 8 to Windows 10. – failed

I downloaded and installed Office 2016 from his Office 365 account on another computer. This different computer activated just fine! So I knew it was a computer issue, not an Office 365 account problem .

Logged into Windows 10 in Safe Mode to activate Office 2016. Failed.

I also checked Event Viewer for clues, and I found this. ” Installation of the Proof of Purchase failed. 0x80041015 Partial Pkey=M7TW3″ I looked online for help with this error but I came up empty.

I was at the end of my troubleshooting rope. I decided to reach out to Microsoft about this issue. Here is what they advised me to do – and it fixed it! Below you will find the solution.

Solution:

Step One: Sign out from all your Office 365 applications.

Step Two: Remove the Office credentials from credential manager. To remove the Office credentials from credential manager please follow the below step

Go to Control Panel — > Credential Manager — > Windows Credentials — > Delete the Microsoft 15 credentials.

Step Three: Remove the credentials from registry. (Backup registry first)

Here is the Registry key location from where we can delete the identities and profiles HKEY_Current_User \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 15.0 \ Common \ Identity — > Delete the Identities and Profiles folders.

I opened up the Office applications and signed into the user’s Office account. Bingo! It activated right away.

Summary: Deleting those offending registry keys was the step that fixed my issue. I hope this can help someone else. Please leave a comment below if this helped or if you have anything to add.

Do I need to re-install Microsoft Office when I switch Office 365 plans? This was the question I was faced with the other day. Our customer was switching from the discontinued Office 365 Midsize Business subscription to the Office 365 Business Premium plan. Here is what I learned doing this switch-over.

I used the switch plans utility in the Office 365 web control panel. The switch of the licenses was seamless. You can find information here on how to use the switch plans utility.

I thought I was all set! I was wrong. A couple days later our customer complained to me that they were getting pop-ups in their Office applications saying the product was unlicensed.

I was suspicious it was because we had switched plans. Microsoft Access is not included in the Business Premium package. I thought maybe the parts of Microsoft Office that our customer wasn’t paying for would just become disabled and the rest of the suite would work properly.

I tried signing into their office account and switching licenses for the Office suite that was installed but it wouldn’t recognize the new licenses.

This customer also has their Office 365 accounts linked to their domain user accounts on their Windows Server Essentials. I thought maybe I could reassign the licenses there. That didn’t work either.

I decided to call Microsoft support about this issue. I talked to a representative at Microsoft. She had me run through the Desktop Setup for Office. Frankly, I’m not sure why I even tried it but that didn’t solve the problem. She told me I had to re-install the Office desktop applications.

I also found an article or two that confirmed my theory, that I needed to re-install the Office applications on each desktop.

I was forced to go around to every computer and uninstall the old Office suite from the Midsize Business plan. I then had to log into their Office account and download the new Office suite.

Let me know in the comments below if you ran into similar issues or found a work-around. I hope this prevents someone from inadvertently switching Office 365 subscriptions without knowing you will need to reinstall Office.

Personally, I wish there was a way that the part of the Office suite you aren’t paying for would just become disabled and the applications you are paying for would continue to work. I will keep you posted if I find additional information.

Office 365 allows you to make a vacation responder in the Outlook web app. This is very useful if you are on the road and don’t have your work computer handy. Or if you don’t feel like setting up a rule in Outlook.

Here are the steps: Go to mail.office365.com .

Sign in with your credentials (normally your email address and password).

Click on the settings gear and select “Set Automatic Replies”.

You can now make a vacation responder message. You can specify how long the vacation responder lasts. OWA even lets you set a custom message for the people inside your organization. Pretty cool, eh?

Our customer recently switched to Microsoft’s Office 365 exchange service as their email provider. Previously to this transition, this company was hosting their own exchange server. After the upgrade some of the employees would get an error message when emailing within the organization. Here is the message:

The email address you entered couldn’t be found. Please check the recipient’s email address and try to resend the message. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.

The email addresses didn’t change during the upgrade to Office 365. The users were correctly entering the email addresses as well.

So the first thing to try is to delete the autocomplete in Outlook. When you enter the recipient in Outlook , delete the autocomplete suggestion that pops up.

See if that fixes the issue, it didn’t for me .

I then downloaded this NK2View tool from here. I ran this cool little utility and it brought up the autocomplete cache. I scrolled down to the email recipient my customer was having trouble emailing and deleted that entry. I then tried sending a test email and it worked like a charm.

Resolution: When I used the NK2View utility to delete the entry it actually deleted the autocomplete entry for real. Apparently, when they were trying to email within the organization the autocomplete had saved some information about their previous email servers and was trying to deliver the message to the old server. I just deleted the autocomplete entry and everything was fine.

Problem: A company split and they were using Office 365 for their email provider. Company A kept the domains. Company A kept all the existing user accounts and email addresses. Company B created a new Office 365 account with their own domain and new email addresses. We needed to be able to forward Company B’s emails to their new addresses, but Company A didn’t want to pay for their Office 365 licenses. Here is the resolution we came across. It worked quite well.

Resolution: I logged into Company A’s portal. I deleted the Company B’s user accounts that were no longer being used.

I then went into the Exchange admin center and clicked on Contacts.

I then created a new mail user.

I filled in the credentials for the new mail users. Note, make sure you keep the alias and the user ID the same (ex. Alias: test.user and then user ID: would be test.user@domain.com). In the external email address field I put in their new email address. I clicked save

and then sent an email to the alias. It wasn’t long and an email showed up in my inbox. The forwarder worked without a hitch!

For the past while, a lot of people have asked me to set up their Office 365 email accounts on their iPhones. I decided I would write a small post on setting up Office 365 email accounts on your iOS device. The screenshots I have included in my tutorial were taken with an iPhone that was running iOS 7.0.2. However, these settings will work for those of you who are running older versions of iOS. If you have an Android device click here for instructions.

Step One: Touch Settings

Step Two: Scroll down until you find Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select it.

Step Three: Click Add Account.

Step Four: Select Exchange

Step Five: Put in your email address and password. Click next when finished. It will verify your settings.

Step Six: Your iOS device will ask you what you want to sync. Select what you want to sync and click save. You have successfully added your email account. Mail will start arriving soon. If it doesn’t come up asking you what you want to sync, continue to the next step.

Today I upgraded one of our Office 365 customers from Microsoft Exchange (Plan 2) to the Office 365 Enterprise E3 plan. After the upgrade was completed, I was left set with one extra Office 365 license. So I started to dig around in the settings, trying to find a way to delete the extra license. I could not find how to remove the extra license. Finally I ran across this helpful forum post on how to remove extra Office 365 licenses. Here are the steps to remove the unused Office 365 license.

Update 6/9/14 : Apparently Microsoft must have gotten tired of all the phone support and listened to us!! They now have a remove license option as well. When you log into your account click on Billing > Subscriptions and click on the subscription you want to change. You will then see a “change quantity” beside the current amount of user licenses. Click “change quantity” and then remove or add licenses!! Thanks Microsoft, you made our job easier.

******************************************************************************

First off you have to meet one of these three criteria’s to remove the unwanted license from your account.

A) Upgrading

B) Correcting a purchase made in error within 90 days of when the change was made.

C) Renewing

If you meet the criteria, you need to call Microsoft Technical support in your area. Here is the link for their customer support number. If you are a Microsoft Partner call this number 1-800-676-7658 and select the cloud services option. They will remove the extra license for you.

Once I was on the phone with Microsoft, I asked if there was a way that I could remove the license myself. He said they (Microsoft) are the only ones that can remove Office 365 licenses from the account, system administrators can’t even remove them. In my opinion, this is rather stupid and I hope Microsoft changes their policies on that soon. In the meantime, I hope this helps you out and if you find a easier solution to removing a Office 365 license let me know by posting in the comments.

I recently upgraded a user from a standard Pop3 email account to a Microsoft Exchange Office 365 email account. The upgrade went great and all the email was transferred, but the user complained about their auto-complete email contacts were not showing up when they typed a contact’s email address in the “send” field. This user was running Windows 7 and was using Outlook 2010. Here are the steps to retrieve the auto-complete file and use it in the new profile.

Step One: Close Outlook

Step Two: Browse to the RoamCache where the auto-complete file is stored. (location is C:\Users\”user.name”\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache

Step Three: Rename RoamCache to old_RoamCache

Step Four: Open Outlook, and create a new email and put a valid email address in the to. . field. Close the new email ( you don’t need to save ). Close Outlook

Step Five: Step 4 creates a new Stream_Autocomplete_”long GUID….xx”.dat DAT File of 1KB in a new RoamCache folder.

Step Six: Change the extension of the file in Step 5 from .dat to .dat22

Step Seven: Copy the original Stream_Autocomplete…from old_RoamCache & paste into the RoamCache folder

Step Eight: Copy the GUID string from the .dat22 and replace the GUID of your previous Stream_AutoComplete

Step Nine: Open Outlook, all of your previous auto-complete entries are now available.

I hope this helps. Special thanks to femi for making my day a lot easier. This post was posted by techspeeder.
