I was troubleshooting a computer the other day that was having Outlook freezing issues. This is what would happen. When previewing an Excel attachment in Outlook (2016) the document would preview but as soon as you would scroll around on the attachment, Outlook would freeze. You couldn’t open, close, or minimize Outlook. However, if you went into Task Manager to kill the program, Outlook appeared to be working normally and didn’t mention “Not Responding”.

After a bit more troubleshooting, I found when Outlook froze up, if I opened a File Explorer Window it would unfreeze Outlook and I could once again use.

Another item I noticed was Outlook seemed to freeze when I used my mouse scroll wheel instead of the scroll bars on the previewed Excel document. I tried my hypothesis a couple times and sure enough, each time I scrolled the previewed Excel document with my mouse scroll wheel Outlook would freeze up.

Troubleshooting Steps I tried:

I installed the latest Office updates.

I opened Outlook in Safe Mode.

I made sure all Add-Ins were disabled.

I ran Outlook as an Administrator

I disabled all Preview Handlers in Outlook and then re-enabled.

The above troubleshooting steps did not resolve my issue. Here is the solution that finally worked for me.

Step One: Open Windows 10 Settings (WinKey + I)

Step Two: Go to Devices > Mouse

Step Three: Turn Off “Scroll inactive Windows when I hover over them”

The Windows 10 feature “Scroll inactive Windows when I hover over them” is supposed to allow you to scroll through side-by-side Windows without having to click it to put focus on each Window. You can just hover over the Window and scroll.

Apparently, the “Scroll Inactive Windows When I Hover Over Them” doesn’t work well with Outlook.

I hope this helps. If it did, please sound off in the comment section below. This was posted by techspeeder.

More than likely the issue is that Outlook downloaded the message but Gmail says the message was not downloaded yet. This results in the error message referenced above.

Here are the steps I used to resolve this issue.

Step One: Log into Gmail on the web.

Step Two: In the search box, in Gmail, search for the message referenced in your error message it should look similar to this: rfc822msgid:<31799347-9C90-4BBB-917D-CF95CCC21451>. Make sure to type the message ID exactly how it is referenced in the error message. Depending on the message ID you may need to add @domain after it like this: rfc822msgid:<54126538.1818.0@wordpress.com> .

Rfc822msgid Search Result

If you typed everything correctly, you should find the offending email message. You can double check to make sure the email message ID matching the message ID of the error you are receiving in Outlook.

Step Three: Delete the offending email message from Gmail.

Step Four: Go back to Outlook and do a Send/Receive. The error message should disappear. If the error message does not disappear you can check out this older post about this issue or perhaps their are multiple messages that need cleared from Gmail.

I hope this helps. Sound off in the comment section if it helped or if you have additional questions.

Issue: Customer contacted me that his email attachments from Outlook 2016 (Buy Office 2016) were corrupted when the recipient received the email. The recipient was unable to view or open the attachments without receiving an error.

Troubleshooting:

Step One: I found the documents were definitely being corrupted. I verified it wasn’t the recipient since the “sent” email attachment in the Outlook sent folder was also corrupted. When trying to open the attachment I got this message: We’re sorry. We can’t open <doc name> because we found a problem with its contents.

Step Two: I found that the document would only become corrupted if the attachment was selected from the recent files list in Outlook 2016. When the file was attached by browsing to “This PC” and picking the file; files can through fine.

Through my troubleshooting I was convinced it was an add-in issue conflicting with the recent files list in Outlook. So through trial-n-error I found the offending add-in.

Resolution: I disabled Adobe’s Send and Track add-in in Outlook. I tried attaching a Word doc and an Adobe Attachment from the recent files list in Outlook and both files came through without a problem. Problem Solved!

To disable an add-in in Outlook go to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage Com Add-ins > Go and deselect the Adobe Send and Track add-in.

If this add-in isn’t present in your Outlook it is possible that another add-in is causing you grief. I would recommend disabling any third-party add-ins and then see if your issue is fixed. If your issue is fixed by disabling add-ins, enable one add-in at a time until you find the culprit.

I ran into a strange issue the other day. Our client said every time she replied to an email in Outlook her font would change to a different color. The version of Outlook my client was using was Outlook 2013 , but this “fix” will also work for Outlook 2016. I got to digging around a bit in Outlook 2013 and I found this was actually a “feature” instead of a problem.

If you find you font automatically changing on you, when replying to email messages, this is where you need to go to turn it off.

Step One: Open Outlook. Go to File > Options > Mail > Stationary and Fonts > Uncheck “Pick a new color when replying or forwarding”. Click OK.

That is all you need to do. I tested this and each time when the client replied her font and font color stayed to what she had set to default.

I hope this help you! This was posted by techspeeder. Follow my blog or my Twitter feed to keep up with the latest troubleshooting tips.

This issue had me quite puzzled. A customer was running Microsoft Outlook 2007 on a Windows 7 Professional computer. The client told me whenever she would try to attach a file, in Outlook, she would get the following error.

The specified module could not be found.

I had never seen this issue before. Here are some of the troubleshooting steps I went through. I thought it could be a virus or malware issue so I ran a scan till I knew that wasn’t the issue. I disable all the add-ins in Outlook that would affect performance, no difference. I created a new Outlook profile, same deal. I repaired Microsoft Office, didn’t fix the issue.

I decided to try disconnecting the mapped network drive. I disconnected the mapped network drive. I clicked “attach file” and it opened Windows Explorer without an issue. I went into the local documents and attached a file just fine. This confirmed in my mind that their had to be an issue between Outlook 2007 and the mapped network drive. I mapped the drive again and boom same error message and Outlook crashed as well.

I disconnected the network drive (R:\\sbs\folder1) and this time I mapped a different network folder (R:\\sbs\folder2). I clicked, attach file and this time I got no error message and Outlook didn’t crash! Now I was confused, one mapped network folder drive worked the other one didn’t. I tried accessing both network folders through Windows Explorer,(without going through Outlook). I could access both folders just fine. I was pretty much at wit’s end.

I called one of my colleagues about the issue. He found a .TVP file on the root of folder one. He removed the .TVP file. He then went into Outlook 2007 and tried attaching a file from that location. It worked. We copied the .TVP file back into that folder and the error came back and Outlook froze. Resolution: We took that .TVP file off the base of that folder and everything was back to normal!!

Some of the most difficult and irritating problems have such a simple fix. I believe this was probably a freak issue. Apparently, their was a file association issue that was creating that error message and then Outlook would freeze and crash.

Special thanks to Kirby for helping me .

Recently, I upgraded a user from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2013. They used Microsoft’s Office 365 exchange service for their email. I set up the account without much of an issue until I got to the autocomplete file. Outlook 2007 stored the autocomplete file as an .NK2 file. Outlook 2013 saves the autocomplete file in a Stream_Autocomplete_***** .DAT file. When you start Microsoft Outlook 2013 for the first time it will try to automatically import your profilename.nk2 file into the new file format. In my situation it didn’t work correctly. It had imported a couple autocomplete files across but not nearly all of them. Here is how I manually imported the .NK2 file from Outlook 2007 into the new Outlook 2013 .Dat file.

Step One: Make sure your .nk2 file is in the following folder: %appdata%\Microsoft\Outlook. Make sure the .nk2 file doesn’t have a .old file (profilename.nk2.old) extension after it. If it has the .old file extension after it delete it.

Step Two: Your .NK2 file must have the same name as your current Outlook 2013 profile to import correctly. To check if the names match:

Click on the Start Menu > Control Panel then click on User Accounts> Mail > Show Profiles. If they match you are ready to go to the next step. If your autocomplete file doesn’t match the name of your profile simply rename it to your current profile name.

Step Three: Click the Start button and then click Run.

Step Four: In the open box, type the following command: outlook.exe /importnk2 and then click OK. This should import the .nk2 file into the Outlook 2013 profile.

I then opened Outlook and all of the autocomplete addresses and contacts were there! I hope this works for you as well.

Recently, we did a new server install for a customer. When I joined the computers to the new domain I had to make new user accounts. I normally run Windows Easy Transfer on the old profile and then transfer the information to the new one. Windows Easy Transfer will generally grab the email profile. However, the one laptop we joined to the domain had Windows Vista for its operating system. Windows Vista has a built in Windows Easy Transfer tool but we found it to be rather “clunky”. Our customer was using Office 365 exchange for their email so we could have left it redownload all the emails, but it would have taken to long and would have been inefficient. Here is how I transferred the profile and AutoComplete file to the new Windows profile.

They were running Microsoft Office 2007 so I went into the location where the data file was stored. The path for the data file in Windows Vista is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook . I copied the “Outlook.ost” to a flash drive.

I then took the computer off the domain and joined it to the new one. When I opened Microsoft Outlook it went through the “setup email account” wizard. I entered the

credentials for the email account. Once it started downloading mail I closed Outlook and browsed to the folder ( C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook) where the new “Outlook.ost” data file was stored. I copied the old data file, from the flash drive, into that folder. I then renamed the old data file to the same as the new data file. I opened Outlook again and entered the username and password and all the email was there.

A little while later our customer called and said the AutoComplete file was missing. So I went back into her old Windows profile. After a bunch of digging around in the old profile I found the .NK2 AutoComplete file. The file was not stored at the usual location but was stored at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\Office. I then copied the AutoComplete file into same folder (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\Office) in the new Windows profile. I renamed the old AutoComplete file (Outlook1.NK2) the same as the current file (Outlook.NK2). I then opened Outlook and all the AutoComplete addresses were there.

How many times do you find yourself scratching your head because you forgot your email password? Or how about when you are setting up an email account for a friend or customer and they don’t remember what it is?

I recently ran into a situation where I was setting up email accounts on some new computers we had just installed. The problem was I didn’t know the passwords for the email accounts I was setting up in Microsoft Outlook. That is when I discovered this tool that will reveal the email account passwords in Microsoft Outlook. Here are the steps to retrieve your password if your account was previously set up in Outlook. ( This also works in Windows Live Mail.)

Go to your Control Panel> User Accounts>Mail > Show Profiles. Select the profile you want.

Then select Properties. Click on the email address that you need the password from and then select change. You should now be at the screen that shows your email account information including your password (with asterisks). Keep that window open.

Download this tool: asteriskkey

Run through the install wizard.

You should eventually come up to the following screen.

I recently upgraded a user from a standard Pop3 email account to a Microsoft Exchange Office 365 email account. The upgrade went great and all the email was transferred, but the user complained about their auto-complete email contacts were not showing up when they typed a contact’s email address in the “send” field. This user was running Windows 7 and was using Outlook 2010. Here are the steps to retrieve the auto-complete file and use it in the new profile.

Step One: Close Outlook

Step Two: Browse to the RoamCache where the auto-complete file is stored. (location is C:\Users\”user.name”\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache

Step Three: Rename RoamCache to old_RoamCache

Step Four: Open Outlook, and create a new email and put a valid email address in the to. . field. Close the new email ( you don’t need to save ). Close Outlook

Step Five: Step 4 creates a new Stream_Autocomplete_”long GUID….xx”.dat DAT File of 1KB in a new RoamCache folder.

Step Six: Change the extension of the file in Step 5 from .dat to .dat22

Step Seven: Copy the original Stream_Autocomplete…from old_RoamCache & paste into the RoamCache folder
