Set up Office 365 Email Forwarding to External Email Addresses

Problem: A company split and they were using Office 365 for their email provider. Company A kept the domains. Company A kept all the existing user accounts and email addresses. Company B created a new Office 365 account with their own domain and new email addresses. We needed to be able to forward Company B’s emails to their new addresses, but Company A didn’t want to pay for their Office 365 licenses. Here is the resolution we came across. It worked quite well.

Resolution: I logged into Company A’s portal. I deleted the Company B’s user accounts that were no longer being used.

I then went into the Exchange admin center and clicked on Contacts.Contacts Tab

Clean Computer to Prevent System Breakage – Windows Accelerator Pro Virus

In the recent past I received an email from someone that was wondering what he should do about the following pop-up.

SystemBreakage

Microsoft Antivirus has found critical process activity on your PC. You need to clean your computer to prevent the system breakage.

Before I got a chance to email him back, he hit OK on that pop-up. He then received this pop-up.

FakeAVmessage

Take note of the misspelling of the word, might.

I quickly emailed him back and told him that it was a fake anti-virus message. If he would have clicked clean computer, he would probably have gotten infected. I told him to run a full scan with his antivirus software. Thankfully, he wasn’t infected.

I decided I would have a little fun with this virus. I have a virtual machine for technical purposes, so I decided I would try to infect my virtual machine with this virus. I found the website that was infected.  Continue reading →

Import a .NK2 Autocomplete file into Outlook 2013

Recently, I upgraded a user from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2013. They used Microsoft’s Office 365 exchange service for their email. I set up the account without much of an issue until I got to the autocomplete file. Outlook 2007 stored the autocomplete file as an .NK2 file. Outlook 2013 saves the autocomplete file in a Stream_Autocomplete_***** .DAT file. When you start Microsoft Outlook 2013 for the first time it will try to automatically import your profilename.nk2 file into the new file format. In my situation it didn’t work correctly. It had imported a couple autocomplete files across but not nearly all of them. Here is how I manually imported the .NK2 file from Outlook 2007 into the new Outlook 2013 .Dat file.

Step One: Make sure your .nk2 file is in the following folder: %appdata%\Microsoft\Outlook. Make sure the .nk2 file doesn’t have a .old file (profilename.nk2.old) extension after it. If it has the .old file extension after it delete it.

Step Two: Your .NK2 file must have the same name as your current Outlook 2013 profile to import correctly. To check if the names match:

Click on the Start Menu > Control Panel then click on User Accounts> Mail > Show Profiles. If they match you are ready to go to the next step. If your autocomplete file doesn’t match the name of your profile simply rename it to your current profile name.

Step Three: Click the Start button and then click Run. 

Step Four: In the open box, type the following command: outlook.exe /importnk2  and then click OK. This should import the .nk2 file into the Outlook 2013 profile.

I then opened Outlook and all of the autocomplete addresses and contacts were there! I hope this works for you as well.

Invading our Privacy? Google allows Google+ Connections to E-mail You

This is my view on the recent announcement that Google will allow their Google+ users to email anyone using their Google+ name. I’m sure some people will agree with my view and others will not, but who cares, you are entitled to your own opinion.

Traditionally, when you want to email someone you needed to get their email address. Google announced a few changes this week on their blog. Gmail will now suggest your Google+ contacts as recipients even though you don’t know their addresses. Lets stop and think, who really needs this? My friends have my email address and the people that don’t have it, really don’t need it.

By default for most people, Google has the “Email via Google+” option, set to “Anyone on Google+” can email you.  I am going to set that option to “only my Circles” can email me, without my address. I would recommend you to do the same. Most people I know can’t keep up with their email inbox already. Why would you want more random email? Don’t you get enough social updates about people you don’t care about already?  Continue reading →

Remote Web Access Error ” An unexpected error occurred”

Remote Web Access is awesome, when it works. We recently set up Remote Web Access on a server running Server Essentials R2 . It was working beautifully, until it went down without warning. You could log onto the website but when you clicked on a computer to connect remotely nothing would happen. When I tried to click on a shared folder it would come up with the following error:

RemoteWebAccessError

An unexpected error occurred. Please try again. If the problem continues, contact the person who manages your server. 

Between another tech and I,  we troubleshot this error for hours, but we couldn’t find a solution. I called Microsoft about the issue and after a one and a half hours of troubleshooting they fixed the issue. This is what they said was the issue.
