Remote Web Access Server 2012 – Opens only Dashboard not Remote Desktop Session

Here is a small tip for the enterprise user. The new remote web access that comes with Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 is really nice. However, I ran into a problem when I wanted to connect to the server using the remote web access website. When I clicked on the server I wanted to connect to, instead of connecting to the server using a remote desktop connection, it would connect to the server dashboard instead. It is actually quite simple to disable the setting when you know where to look. Here are the instructions.

Step One: Open Windows Server Dashboard and click on Home > Getting Started

Step Two: Click on Setup Anywhere Access > Click to Configure Anywhere AccessConfigure Anywhere Access

Step Three: Click on the Customize option beside Website Settings.Customize Website

Step Four: Click on Server Connection Options tab.Open Remote Desktop Under Server Connection Options you can select how you want to connect to your server using remote web access. By default Open Dashboard will be selected, just select Open Remote Desktop instead. Save your settings and you will be all set.

Instructions to Remove the Malicious Finding Discount Program

More and more computers these days get infected with adware and malware programs. A customer recently brought his laptop in that had the Finding Discount program installed. This program is malicious and I would consider it a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). It will change your search engines, bring up messages about your computer being infected, and slow down your computer. Here is a step by step process on how to remove this software.

The computer that was infected was running Windows 8.1. However, the removal process should be similar for those who are running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.

Step One: Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program. Locate Finding Discount and click Uninstall.Finding Discount Under Programs

Step Two: When you click Uninstall you will get redirected to a webpage. It will probably look similar to the one below. This is when it gets interesting. Normally, you can click uninstall on a program and it will just remove itself. But this program proves to be quite tricky.Finding Discount Webpage

Step Three: Just ignore the message it is proclaiming. . . it is bogus. Scroll to the bottom of the webpage and enter the uninstall characters they provide.

Step Four: A small download will start called FindingDiscountUninstaller.exe from uninstall.finding.discount. Click Run once it is finished downloading. Continue reading

How to Enable ” Delete Confirmation Dialog” in Windows 10

Microsoft is making many changes with their newest operating system, Windows 10. At the time of this article I am using Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926. Starting with Windows 8 and continuing into Windows 10, when you delete a file you don’t get a ” Would you like to delete this file?” confirmation dialog box. This setting is still disabled by default in the Windows 10 Build 9926. Below you will find a short video on how to disable this feature. If you would rather follow the written directions, you will find them below.

I personally don’t mind when I delete a file, that is just deletes it, and doesn’t prompt me to confirm my actions. However, if you want the extra security prompt before you delete the a file, here is how you enable it in Windows 10. These settings should also apply to Windows 8 or 8.1 as described in this article.

Step One: Right-click Recycle Bin on your desktop and select Properties.Recycle Bin Properties

Step Two: Check the box “Display delete confirmation dialog box”. Select Apply and then OK. Make sure you select the hard drive that you want this setting to affect. On my computer I have an SSD for the operating system and another hard drive for document storage. You can specify the setting for both drives or just one. Pretty neat!

Gmail IMAP “All Mail” Folder Missing in Outlook 2013

I set up a Gmail email address in Outlook 2013 the other day. The customer wanted his Gmail account set up as an IMAP account.  I entered the settings and configured the account. Everything was working fine besides the fact the “all mail” folder was missing. There is a simple fix for this.

Step One: Right-click on your Gmail account in Outlook and click new folder. Name the new folder All Mail.

Create All Mail FolderStep Two: Right-click on your email account select Update Folder ListUpdate Folders

Your email account will synchronize your folders and will now bring down your email into your “All Mail” folder.

That was the “fix” that worked for me. If this didn’t fix your problem you can also try the following suggestion. Continue reading

Do I Need to Re-Install Office When I Switch Office 365 plans?

Do I need to re-install Microsoft Office when I switch Office 365 plans? This was the question I was faced with the other day. Our customer was switching from the discontinued Office 365 Midsize Business subscription to the Office 365 Business Premium plan. Here is what I learned doing this switch-over.

I used the switch plans utility in the Office 365 web control panel. The switch of the licenses was seamless. You can find information here on how to use the switch plans utility.

I thought I was all set! I was wrong. A couple days later our customer complained to me that they were getting pop-ups in their Office applications saying the product was unlicensed.

Office 365 Subscription Has Expired

I was suspicious it was because we had switched plans. Microsoft Access is not included in the Business Premium package. I thought maybe the parts of Microsoft Office that our customer wasn’t paying for would just become disabled and the rest of the suite would work properly.

I tried signing into their office account and switching licenses for the Office suite that was installed but it wouldn’t recognize the new licenses. Continue reading
