Remote Web Access Error ” An unexpected error occurred”

Remote Web Access is awesome, when it works. We recently set up Remote Web Access on a server running Server Essentials R2 . It was working beautifully, until it went down without warning. You could log onto the website but when you clicked on a computer to connect remotely nothing would happen. When I tried to click on a shared folder it would come up with the following error:

RemoteWebAccessError

An unexpected error occurred. Please try again. If the problem continues, contact the person who manages your server.

Between another tech and I,  we troubleshot this error for hours, but we couldn’t find a solution. I called Microsoft about the issue and after a one and a half hours of troubleshooting they fixed the issue. This is what they said was the issue.

Troubleshooting Steps:

1.  We were getting unexpected errors while accessing shared folders remotely Continue reading

Couldn’t update to Windows 8.1 (0x80070005-0x4000D)

I haven’t heard of many people, that the upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 didn’t work smoothly. However, I did run into an issue recently. When trying to upgrade a Windows 8 computer to 8.1, it would download the update from the Microsoft Store but through the installation process it would error out. Here is how I fixed the issue. Kudos to Peter_Mc , without your helpful troubleshooting, this would have been a long day 🙂

Problem: When installing the Windows 8.1 update, the update would install until it got to 3% and then it would error out. This is the message it gave: Couldn’t update to Windows 8.1 . . .  Sorry, we couldn’t complete the update to Windows 8.1. We’ve restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.  0x80070005-0x4000D .8.1 upgrade error

Solution:

Step One: Browse to this location: C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther and you will find a Continue reading

Internet Explorer 10 Security Update (KB2862772) Failed Installation

I recently worked on a Windows 7 64 bit laptop that was having issues installing the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 (KB2862772).

KB2862772 update

The laptop would install the update and then I would restart. However, during the reboot it would do its normal update process “Configuring Windows Updates”, it would get to about 35% and then say “Failure Configuring Windows Updates, Reverting Changes”.

I searched online for some help but no one had a good solution for this issue. After a bunch troubleshooting this is the solution I found.

Step One: On the laptop, I went to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off. I unchecked the Internet Explorer 11 box and disabled the browser.

( On a side note) I don’t know why it said Internet Explorer 11, it should have said IE 10 since that was the version I was on. That could be one of the reasons the security update for Internet Explorer 10 didn’t want to install.

Step Two: I then went to Windows Update and installed the Security Update for Internet Continue reading

Antivirus Security Pro Virus (Trojan.Agent.rfz) Removal Instructions

Monday Morning: Today I visited a customer that was infected with the “Antivirus Security Pro” virus. Our customer was using Windows Intune for antivirus protection on a Windows 7 computer. Here are a couple screenshots of the virus. It tries to pose as a legit antivirus program, when in fact it is infecting your PC. It then tries to make you pay for the antivirus software to fix all of “the problems” it is finding.
