Gmail POP Error in Outlook ” Receiving Reported Error (0x800CCC90)”

A customer was receiving this error message in Outlook 2007 the other day.

” Task “anybody@gmail.com” – Receiving reported error (0x800CCC90) : ‘Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: * OK Gimap ready for requests from (IP Address).

The customer was using a Gmail address in Outlook. The account was set up as POP3. I wasn’t sure what the fix for this big error code was going to be. It is actually quite simple.

Solution: 

Step One:  Open Outlook and go File > Account Settings

Step Two: Click the email account you are having trouble with and select Change.

QuickBooks Premier 2013 Missing Outlook Option for Send Form

I ran into this bizarre issue today. A customer called and said two of their computers could not email out of QuickBooks 2013 using Outlook 2013. Both computers were running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. I connected to one of the troublesome computers and sure enough, I browsed to Edit > Preferences > Send Form. Under Send Form they had the Web Mail and QuickBooks E-mail options but the Outlook option was mysteriously missing.

After about five or six hours of troubleshooting this issue I finally was able to get the problem resolved. I was on the phone with a QuickBooks rep for over two hours and he didn’t know the answer to the issue either. Here are some of the troubleshooting steps I went through before I found the solution. I will include links at the bottom of my article for some of the websites I visited trying to find a solution.

I. I made sure Outlook 2013 was a supported version in QuickBooks 2013.

II. Made Sure Outlook was the default mail program.

III. Set the default email program in Internet Explorer.

IV. Made sure their was a Mail profile in Outlook. I also created a new Outlook profile just in case that was the issue. It wasn’t.

V. I ran a repair on Office 2013 and QuickBooks 2013.

Remote Web Access Server 2012 – Opens only Dashboard not Remote Desktop Session

Here is a small tip for the enterprise user. The new remote web access that comes with Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 is really nice. However, I ran into a problem when I wanted to connect to the server using the remote web access website. When I clicked on the server I wanted to connect to, instead of connecting to the server using a remote desktop connection, it would connect to the server dashboard instead. It is actually quite simple to disable the setting when you know where to look. Here are the instructions.

Step One: Open Windows Server Dashboard and click on Home > Getting Started

Step Two: Click on Setup Anywhere Access > Click to Configure Anywhere AccessConfigure Anywhere Access

Step Three: Click on the Customize option beside Website Settings.Customize Website

Step Four: Click on Server Connection Options tab.Open Remote Desktop Under Server Connection Options you can select how you want to connect to your server using remote web access. By default Open Dashboard will be selected, just select Open Remote Desktop instead. Save your settings and you will be all set.

Instructions to Remove the Malicious Finding Discount Program

More and more computers these days get infected with adware and malware programs. A customer recently brought his laptop in that had the Finding Discount program installed. This program is malicious and I would consider it a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). It will change your search engines, bring up messages about your computer being infected, and slow down your computer. Here is a step by step process on how to remove this software.

The computer that was infected was running Windows 8.1. However, the removal process should be similar for those who are running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.

Step One: Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program. Locate Finding Discount and click Uninstall.Finding Discount Under Programs

Step Two: When you click Uninstall you will get redirected to a webpage. It will probably look similar to the one below.This is when it gets interesting. Normally, you can click uninstall on a program and it will just remove itself. But this program proves to be quite tricky.Finding Discount Webpage

 

Step Three: Just ignore the message it is proclaiming. . . it is bogus. Scroll to the bottom of the webpage and enter the uninstall characters they provide.

Full SSD on Windows 7 Lenovo Computer With Very Few Files

Problem: Recently, I had the privilege to work on a computer, that according to the customer was always running out of space. That surprised me because the computer had a Samsung 750GB EVO SSD. The computer was a Lenovo ThinkCentre A70z running Windows 7. We had upgraded the computer from a traditional hard drive to a SSD a year ago and I was sure they had plenty of space. I decided to dig into the issue and find out what the problem was.

I noticed right away using Windows Explorer that drive C had around 75GB of free space. I browsed to C:\Users\<username>. I right-clicked on their user folder and selected the general tab. Underneath the general tab I saw their user account was using only 80GB-90GB of space. I thought this was odd.

I then downloaded my trusty WinDirStat utility. I ran the tool and left it scan the folders on the computer. What I saw was quite puzzling. WinDirStat said there was only 180GB of the SSD used. However, when I went under “Computer” using Windows Explorer I showed approximately 600GB of space being used.

I decided to do a Disk cleanup on the SSD. The disk cleanup utility found 5.5GB of unnecessary files. I cleaned the computer but that didn’t account for the extra 400GB of files lurking somewhere on the SSD.

Thinking there may have been something weird with the Samsung SSD, I downloaded and installed the Samsung Magician Software. I ran the program and everything indicated that the SSD was in excellent condition.

Solution: I decided to try one more disk analyzer tool for Windows 7. I downloaded SpaceSniffer. Not having real high hopes, I ran the program and I instantly saw two huge files lurking on the hard drive. I noticed they were stored under a C:\RRbackups\SZ\<folder>. I tried to browse to the RRbackups folder but I got an “access denied” message. I entered the whole file path location in Windows Explorer and I was able to find the backup folders. There were a couple folders.
